Dear Doctor, Thank you for being there. My question concerns the topic of ‘detoxification’. We are told to eat all kinds of foods but rarely are we told how to get rid of the same and other unwanted residue and elements from our systems via detoxification. Please appraise on the topic and tell me on the best ways to cleanse or detoxify our body organs affordably, namely the kidneys, pancreas, liver, the eyes too if applicable, etc. Also, which kinds of foods are inappropriate in that they bring impurities or leave harmful residue in our bodies, and which kinds of foods and drinks are excellent for detoxification? Thank you. Sincerely, Me.   Dear “Me”, Thank you for the your question. 'Detoxification' is a word that suggests that you have toxins in your body that need urgent removal. This is not true. Your cells burn energy so that your body can function. During this process some chemicals are produced and are known as free radicals. Free radicals help the cell burn energy, a process called oxidation. Normally, the body can manage to contain these free radicals. When the free radicals are excess in amount, the oxidation is thought to cause body cell dysfunction. This dysfunction and cell death is thought to be the cause of diseases like cancer and heart disease. Oxidation has also been thought to be one of the causes of aging. Certain foods have been found to reduce the amounts of these free radicals. The main type of food with this ‘anti- oxidant’ quality is vitamins. The vitamins include beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E which are found in colour-rich fruits and vegetables: Some foods rich in these vitamins include:
  • tomatoes
  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • sukumawiki
  • spinach
  • sweet potato
  • mangoes
  • oranges
  • red and green peppers
Other foods known to have antioxidant effects include nuts, red meat that may have chemical called zinc. You shouldn’t worry. Your body has mechanisms to manage these free radicals preventing any damage. With a proper diet of anti oxidant foods you should be confident that you are protected from the ill effects of oxidants. Some studies have shown no direct link between taking supplements and reducing the chances of getting cancer.   Do you have a nutrition question? Please ask our nutritionist.
